WHAT IS SLEEP?

Anyone who has stayed up late a few nights in a row will know that sluggish feeling the next day, the yawning and heavy eyes and a definite lack of concentration.

The benefits of going to bed early and a good night’s sleep is a sure fire cure for that wide awake feeling the next day. You work better and feel better you function properly without having a short temper

A good night’s sleep plays a big part in our all round general health and there is a reason why it is called "beauty sleep", just take a look at anyone who is a bit of a night owl, they have bags and dark rings around the eyes as lack of sleep strains the muscles around the eyes when tired causing a hangdog expression.
We sleep to rejuvenate ourselves to rest our minds and body. Our brain re-runs the day’s events in dreams, if you have ever been worried about something you may have dreamt about it, this could be the brains way of working out the best solution to a problem: "lets sleep on it" as the saying goes".

If we find the hours that we sleep becoming disrupted on a regular basis you may find a change in your personality, you may become more emotional and even more prone to infections and minor illness such as colds, and mouth ulcers; in general you will become run down.

Our bodies, especially children’s, need to rest, (although people with young children may sometimes dispute this!), the body repairs and grows in this quiet time when nothing else is going on.

Reasons why we lack sleep are numerous, just simply going to bed late and getting into that habit is one.
Drinking and eating late causes disturbed sleep and as anyone who has children knows, those first few months of a baby’s life can be made a misery for parents of children who are unsettled. Waking every few hours for whatever reason can put a real strain on a relationship if both mum and dad are tired making even the smallest problem of daily life seem bigger than it really is.

A snoring partner is a classic reason why some people do not get a good night’s sleep.

It may depend on the individual as to how much sleep is enough but a regular night’s sleep on average is anything from six to eight hours, and for children, up to ten hours.

Some people may find it beneficial to have a 15 minute cat nap during the afternoon, especially mums with young children; it can make you feel refreshed and ready to carry on without that feeling of fighting tiredness.

Even office/factory workers may find that a quick power nap increases the feeling of well-being enabling them to function better and work better.

The conclusion being that good regular unbroken sleep is essential for a healthy mind body and spirit.
